The Cross-Body Bag from SeamsFineKS

I admit it, I’m a bag lady. I just love bags. A bag for everything and everything in a bag is my motto. I’m always searching for the perfect purse. It has to be large enough to carry 4 pairs of glasses, a wallet (slim), a phone, some pens, a small note book a hand held telescope and it absolutely MUST have a place for me to hook my keys. I’m definitely a function over form kind of girl but show me a bag that can meet my functional needs AND look good and I’m all over it. For a long time, I was a huge Baggalini fan.  Then I found this Dakine mini backpack while traveling last year and I was in heaven. Cute but wicked functional. It didn’t get much better than that. Well that is until I found The Cross Body Bag by Dawn Shew of SeamsFineKS.

I found Dawn via an online auction organized to raise funds for Jessica from Balancing Everything. I was thrilled when I won the auction for the custom made cross body bag. As soon as then auction closed Dawn promptly got in touch with me to discuss my needs. Here’s a clip of the email I sent her.

“On a regular basis, I carry my Kindle or a notebook and 4 pairs of glasses, three of which are in an over size cases. Those three can more or less roam free in the bag. The things I perpetually chase are my iPhone, my reading glasses (typical glasses case) and my wallet (a slim item that just holds cash & credit cards). The wallet and the glasses could share a pocket.

I am not a gentle flower 🙂 I am ruff and tumble and go through life with gusto. My favorite color is purple. Blues and greens come in second and third. Red is great for contrast, but I tend to shy away from yellow and oranges. White is a color I admire from afar because inevitably I will spill my tea or accidentally smear some chocolate on it :).”

SeamsFineKS Cross Body Bag in Lilac & Chocolate

She showed me some fabric swatches and I narrowed it down to a lilac & brown combination or a dark blue. Once she told me the Lilac was outdoor weight fabric I was sold.

I love it! It holds all my necessities and is cute to boot! It’s very well made and very sturdy. The wide strap is very comfortable and since it’s adjustable, it works both cross-body and just over the shoulder.

On the left the bag full of my stuff. On the right all of my stuff that the bag holds.
My phone was charging and my small notebook was open on the desk while I was drafting this, but they fit too!

You can find more of Dawn’s work at http://www.etsy.com/shop/SeamsFineKS.

Note: I received no compensation for this review. Dawn donated her time and materials to help Jessica. I wanted to highlight her good deed and talk about an awesome bag.

How I Cut My Laundry in Half

'laundry' photo (c) 2009, Martijn van Exel - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ Does anyone actually “like” doing laundry? I suppose there must be someone out there who enjoys sorting, lugging, washing, drying, more sorting, and more lugging, I just know it’s not me. I’ll take a daily trip to the grocery store over weekly laundry any day.

Still, knowing how to wash and dry clothes is a skill that is required to live independently as a successful adult. I can remember getting to college and watching some of my classmates pondering the coin operated washers and dryers as though they were some of life’s greatest mysteries. Oh, the shock when they pulled blush colored socks out of the same load as the new maroon sweatshirt emblazoned with the school insignia. Oh wait, silk isn’t washable? What happened to my wool sweater?

I figure it is better for them to practice on their childhood clothes. A Star Wars shirt is replaceable at a low cost. The dry clean only blouse that goes with the interview suit not so much. Of course I hope to educate my daughter in the beauty of machine washable fabrics, but that’s another blog post. We aren’t moving to a nudest colony (can you imagine how much sun screen we’d go through?), so the kids need know how to do their own laundry.

My list if laundry directions for the kids. In October, I handed over responsibility for their laundry to them. I had a meeting on this particular day, so I left instructions and made sure Mim knew that he was to be as equally active in this chore as his sister.

It’s been a few weeks and a few laundry cycles and so far, things appear to be going well. They sort their clothes and then alternate who is responsible for which load. Teamwork for the win! I am enjoying my lighter work load and while I won’t go so far as to say they are “enjoying” their new responsibilities, the clothes are getting clean. The part about folding and PUTTING THE CLOTHES AWAY might need a little tweaking. I found a pile of clean clothes on the floor by Mim’s door this morning. *Sigh* Baby steps. Baby steps.

Eventually they’ll need to learn to iron. I may need to hire a tutor for that lesson, cuz mama don’t iron except under EXTREME duress.

Hmmm, *racks brain for ironing tutor*. Oh GRAMMMY!

What chores are your children responsible for?

Black Friday Madness – I have a choice (and so do you)

'Turkey Dinner' photo (c) 2005, Matt Chan - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/ Christmas seems to be spilling into our lives earlier and earlier each year.

It is now common place to see Christmas decorations before Halloween. The only thing that held the advertisements off this year was the contentious election. Once we elected a president all bets were off.

Now I hear that some stores will be opening ON Thanksgiving Night. My first reaction is disgust followed closely by outrage. Stores shouldn’t be ALLOWED to do that!

“Time and a half baby!”

The argument is made that some people are thrilled for the holiday pay.  I’m not sure I buy that most WANT to be working. Even if they don’t have family, the holiday season is crazy enough for retail people with out working Thanksgiving night. Retail stores starting planning for December displays and sales back in July. People work on Thanksgiving Night because they don’t have a choice.  They need the job.  If they refuse to work, they’ll lose their job, or they will be penalized in some way. What about management level employees? They don’t get overtime pay.

A theme on one side of the election this year was reducing government intervention in business management. To an extent, I favor this, but I can’t say I trust business operators to run in a safe, respectful manor. Profits ALWAYS come first.

Hmmm, let me think about this for a second. It’s like one of those crazy high school math problems.

  • Profits come first.
  • Businesses make money when I spend money buying the goods and services they offer.
  • What if I didn’t shop on Thanksgiving night? Then my money does not support a business who’s practices I disagree with. If enough people disagree, and don’t shop on Thanksgiving Night, then the stores won’t make money. In fact, the stores will lose money on salaries and utilities.

By staying home on Thanksgiving Night, and Black Friday, I might miss a few bargins, but I’ll gain a whole lot of peace of mind. I can’t control what other people do, but I know I’ll choose peace of mind over another gadget any day of the week.

Happy Thanksgiving.

P.S. Interesting piece on the economics of Black Friday. Hat tip Allison Worthington for the link.

Life, The Universe and The Election Process

Hey! How ya doin’?

We survived hurricane Sandy with minimal damage. The power flickered, but never went out. We are without cell service, but AT&T Wireless has been notified and life goes on.

'Vote!' photo (c) 2005, Ho John Lee - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/I’m writing. I’m writing many words, just not here. I had some deadlines, for our town paper and for Albinism Insight, and I’ve been plowing away at the fiction piece I’m working on.

I ran into a reader last weekend who commented on my more informational posts of late. I have opinions (heaven only knows) but the recent focus has been the election and I don’t want to discuss my politics here. I will say I’m am disgusted by the commercials from both sides and the major news outlets really aren’t any better (ANY of them). I am taken back to my college days where as a communications major, I perfected my analytical skills for dissecting for what I hear and read. The idea was that if you could analyze commercials, or press releases you could better understand what would work for your perspective clients.

The skill set actually has broad application in everyday life.  It doesn’t matter if it is a commercial, or “news”. My mantra these days seems to be “what’s your source?” I am overwhelmed by it all, I don’t want to just follow party lines. I really want to understand the views of the people who are running for office at every level. This is very hard to do, especially, when the candidates spend their time pointing fingers at their opponents rather than talking about their own plans and beliefs.

A note to all political candidates. STOP telling me what you think I want to hear. START telling me what YOU stand for. I’m not undecided, but I like to be sure of my choices. I want to understand the other side’s position so I know what I’m voting against as well as I know what I am voting for. Not an easily attainable goal these days that’s for sure.

There is only one week left and I doubt the campaigns will change their tactics now. I’ll vote. I believe it is a privilege not to be taken lightly. But, I’m not sure I’ll be happy regardless of the outcome of any of the races that impact me.

I welcome comments on the election process, but please, keep it civil.

Decor Discord

When we visited Charleston we knew we wanted more than a pair of hotel rooms but between price and availability we weren’t able to find what we wanted in a hotel property. So eventually we landed at a Wyndham Vacation Rental on the Isle of Palms. It was laid out perfectly with two bedrooms, two bathrooms a small kitchen and a living space with enough comfy chairs for everyone AND free wireless internet. The unit over looked a pool, was a short walk to the beach and was part of a larger resort that offered bike rentals and other amenities. In a word, it was perfect.

Well, there was this one thing. Um, whoever decorated the space had some REALLY interesting tastes. The overall theme was Key West Modern which really makes sense given the location and the setting, but the execution was well, kitchy.

The bedroom I shared had a nautical theme. IN YO FACE, OVER THE TOP NAUTICAL YO!

Cookie Jar in the shape of an oversized woman wearing a yellow bikini with black polka dotsThese gems hung out in the kitchen, I’d hate to disturb this lovely just to get a cookie.

They looked out on the living space, inhabited by a wicker couch with cushions in a loud Hawaiian shirt pattern. Sorry, not photo as it was usually occupied :).

The back of a large woman in a bathing suit. This? This is the piece de resistance. It is hung just outside the kitchen door, so I suspect it is an attempt at preventing vacation over indulgence (as if the cookie jar wasn’t enough), but it kind of gives me the creeps especially since I kept resting my hand on her bum as I looked for a light switch (turns out the switch was on the inside).

There was one item I just loved.

A clock with no numbers, but the face says Who cares?

Because really who cares about time when you’re on vacation?

Who Will Save The Sing Off?

Dear NBC,

When you cancelled The Sing Off, you cancelled one of the best reality shows on TV. Certainly one of the best shows on your network.

I did my part. I watched faithfully all three seasons. I shouted from the treetops about how awesome the show was. Between the kids and I we purchased no less than thirty of the tracks available on iTunes and grumped about the ones not made available (Nicole Sherzinger and Jerry Lawson’s duet from Season two). I liked my favorite groups on Facebook and followed them on Twitter. I JUMPED at the chance to see season three groups perform live. What more could I have done to show you I cared?

Right on the heels on the cancellation announcement, you announced the acquisition of a new singing show from the producer of The Voice. Meh, who cares. It wasn’t the competition that compelled me to watch. It was the talent and the reasonable panel of judges. I have enough stress and drama in my day to day life. I don’t need it in my entertainment. The Sing Off was a show I could sit down and enjoy with my kids. Shows like that are few and far between these days.

My first reaction to the news was shock, followed quickly by anger. I signed the petition in support of bringing the show back, but with the announcement of the replacement, I knew it was a done deal. So to NBC I say ~@#$%!!!!

Sincerely,

Lee Laughlin

So, *dusts off hands* now that NBC has released The Sing Off, who is going to pick it up? C’mon, this isn’t unheard of, there are shows that have struggled on the broadcast networks who have thrived in the land of cable. What about MTV? You know MUSIC Television? Maybe CMT? How about USA Network? TNT?

SOMEONE PLEASE AIR THIS SHOW.

Mama needs her a cappella fix.

Got a Case Manager?

'Grandma Luisa' photo (c) 2005, mookielove - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/My mother’s health has been described as a house of cards. She’s older and much to her frustration, her health is failing. She’s a three-time cancer survivor and she still lives alone. Her medical care is delivered via a senior health practice affiliated with a prestigious hospital. Reputations be damned, good medical care comes down to good people caring about what they do.

It is not too much of a stretch to say that the only reason my mother is alive and able to live on her own is because of Anna. Anna is a Case Manager with my mother’s doctor’s office. Until recently, I thought every good sized geriatric medical practice had at least one case manager on staff. Turns out, Anna is a rarity in more ways than one.

Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without Anna. My mother lives about an hour and a half from me. It’s almost all highway driving, but three hours round trip plus time to visit means my trips are infrequent. I do my best, but I’m an only child with a husband and two children, so my plate is pretty full.

My mother sees so many specialists, one needs a score card to keep track of her appointments and medicines. Thankfully, Anna keeps score. She is an experienced nurse with excellent communication skills and an inability to accept no for an answer.

The other advantage of having an Anna on the team? There is an unbiased, third party to mediate disagreements (No Mom, you cannot leave the hospital against medical advice). Anna is one part humanitarian and one part drill sergeant. My mother is a fiercely proud and independent woman which Anna respects, but Anna doesn’t take any baloney from anyone.

Anna is also a wealth of knowledge when it comes to social service agencies and Medicaid/Medicare rules and regulations. She acts as an advocate on my mother’s behalf when my mother can’t and I can’t be there to do it myself. She knows my mother well and can share successful approaches with medical professionals that make caring for her easier, thus making my mother more comfortable and the treatment more expedient and effective.

Not everyone needs the breadth of Anna’s expertise. Some have spouses or family who can manage many of the details, but when it comes down to coordinating treatment. EVERYBODY needs an Anna. She has a knack for cutting through the red tape and insuring that everyone is on the same page. She’s fluent in medical speak and can translate and interpret even the most convoluted doctor’s report. She answers questions that I might not otherwise ask lest I waste a doctor’s time. She explains in plain english what is happening, why it is happening and what outcome is expected.

I am familiar with case managers working as part of cancer treatment centers and after this experience, working with a case manager in geriatric health, I encourage everyone when evaluating medical practices, to ask if they employ a case manager. Having an Anna in your life can lessen the stress of being ill or caring for a loved one with chronic illness or failing health.

May you all find an Anna in your life when you need someone to help you negotiate the challenges of the medical system.

Thank you Anna for all you do.

He Spoils Me

I am an audiophile of epic proportions and A-Man (bless him) is my enabler. If I never saw another TV show, it would be sad, but I’d live. If I never heard music again, that would be the death of me.

The Top of A-Man's dresser including a tuner, a multi-disc CD player and one of the speakers. There a ball cap strategically positioned to block the display of the tuner. I have an iPod and my car came with a great sound system. There are audio sources in the rooms of the house where I spend the most time. The most recent addition is The SqueezeBox Touch WiFi music player. It connects to our wireless network and plays local radio stations (no static whoo hoo!). Pandora (requires a subscription) and Sirius/XM. It will also access play lists from iTunes, but will not play any songs in Apple’s proprietary AAC format (a rant for another post for sure *makes angry eyes at Apple and the RIAA*).

The favorites screen on the SqueezeBoxLogitech makes stand alone WiFi Music players, but this one is a component to an existing stereo system in our bedroom. Set up seemed to go fairly quickly and using it is a snap. This model is a touch screen (it also comes with a remote). I can also manage it from any of the computers on the network. For the most part, I set up my favorites and then use about three different selections depending on the time of day, radio in the morning, upbeat country or rock during the day and mellow at night. One of the best features (and the one A-man spent the most time researching) is the dimming. The SqueezeBox Touch will go dark after about 30 seconds so we can avoid the addition of another ball cap (in the photo above, the ball cap blocks out the light from the display on the tuner).

Do you require silence to sleep? Do you prefer music of just white noise?

I am a happy camper when it comes to the Logitech SqueezeBox Touch. These opinions are my own and I was in no way compensated for this post.
